Fire guts ECG warehouse in Cape Coast

-

A fire outbreak at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warehouse in Cape Coast on Wednesday destroyed electrical cables worth thousands of cedis.

About 60 drums of 2×25mm aluminium electrical cables were damaged, but no casualties were recorded.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. It took personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Central Region nearly four hours to bring the blaze under control.

Swift response by firefighters

The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, stated that the GNFS responded to a distress call at 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday (February 19), reporting a fire at the ECG warehouse.

He said the quick intervention of GNFS personnel prevented the warehouse from being completely destroyed.

“On arrival at the scene at 4:35 p.m., firefighters observed that the fire had engulfed the outdoor stockyard of the warehouse, where bundles of 2x25mm aluminium cables were stored,” he explained.

DOIII Hudu added that firefighters from the regional headquarters quickly called for reinforcement from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station to contain the fire.

Preventing further damage

The firefighters strategically prevented the fire from spreading to the main warehouse and adjoining properties. After hours of intense firefighting efforts, the fire was completely extinguished around 8:00 p.m.

The Central Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah, who was present at the scene, urged businesses and institutions to prioritize fire safety, especially during the dry season.
