A late-night fire has destroyed six shops at the Bantama Racecourse Market in Kumasi, leaving traders devastated as goods worth thousands of cedis were reduced to ashes.
The blaze, which occurred around 9: pm, consumed perishable items such as watermelons, grapes, and apples, along with two cold storage shops.
Victims estimate losses to be as high as GH₵5 million, with no items salvaged from the flames.
The Deputy Queen Mother for watermelon sellers at the market, Hajia Meeli called for urgent support and improved safety measures.
“We had closed for the day when we received calls about the fire. We’ve lost about five truckloads of goods, worth around GH₵5 million. We need help,” she told Adom News.
The affected traders are appealing to authorities for assistance and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
