The Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for the Karaga constituency, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has introduced a GH¢500,000 scholarship program designed to support journalists in the Northern Region in advancing their education.

Addressing the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association Awards in Tamale, Dr. Amin Adam voiced his concerns about the challenging working conditions faced by journalists, despite their vital role in shaping public discourse and informing citizens about government policies.

He urged media owners to improve compensation for journalists, emphasizing that better working conditions will enhance professionalism and independence within the media industry.

“I’ve had discussions with some of you and media proprietors, and I’m often taken aback by the harsh conditions you work under,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.

“You play a key role in communicating the public’s voice to the government, yet your working conditions do not reflect the significant contribution you make.”

Acknowledging the tough economic environment, the finance minister highlighted the importance of media owners investing in their journalists by offering better pay and benefits.

“I urge media proprietors to reward you fairly for the excellent work you are doing and the service you provide to society.”

Dr. Amin Adam also highlighted the government’s economic achievements amid challenges, including increased spending on social interventions.

“In 2016, we allocated nearly GH¢1 billion to the National Health Programme. Last year, it was GH¢3 billion, and this year we’re investing GH¢6.5 billion under the health insurance scheme. We remain committed to investing in social interventions that alleviate poverty.”

The scholarship program aims to help media practitioners enhance their skills and advance their careers.

He also called on journalists to uphold professionalism and use their platforms responsibly, especially as the country approaches the 2024 general elections, stressing the need to maintain peace and stability.

Dr. Amin Adam’s emphasis on improving journalist welfare and his scholarship initiative underscore a growing recognition of the challenges faced by journalists in Ghana.

His remarks have been well-received by the media community in the Northern Region.
