Fight against Cybercrime a must

Acting Director General at National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Jerry Konadu-Addo has stated emphatically that the fight against Cybercrime in the country must be correctly implemented.

A national cyber security centre is to be set up in the next few months to liaise with relevant state agencies and the private sector to oversee cyber-security operations in the country, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced.

That, he explained, had become necessary because the national identification system, the digital addressing system, e-payments, digital financial services and the various e-government initiatives in which Ghana was now taking so much pride, could be undermined or brought to a halt through cybercrime.

Speaking during an interview, Mr Konadu-Addo indicated the world is evolving at a faster pace hence the need for the government to protect the citizens against electronic crimes such as hacking, online scams and fraud, identity theft, attacks on computer systems and illegal or prohibited online content.

“The world is evolving so we have to also protect ourselves against cybercrime. People can be easily hacked nowadays. All these mobile money issues will be looked at. The check will serve as a burglar proof against cybercrime…” he said.

He however revealed that some IT experts design special softwares such as ransonware to lure users to steal their money reason fighting cybercrime in the technological era is a must.

“People use ransonware softwares and others to attack emails. If you download anything they will install it and monitor you secretly. Later all your money can be withdrawn. Some people develop it as a pornographic material. The moment you download it they get you…” He maintained.

According to Mr Jerry Konadu-Addo, the government is willing to protect the citizenry at all cost.

“All the experts have been put together towards this policy. The Ghana police and all the heads of national security are involved to make sure the implementation is solid to fight cybercrime…” he maintained on Accra based Neat FM.
