Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, will conclude the 2024 football year ranked 77th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.
While this marks a drop of four places globally, they maintain their 14th position in Africa.
The team’s decline follows a disappointing campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where they failed to secure a spot in the tournament for the first time in 20 years.
Ghana had been ranked 73rd globally as recently as October but struggled to keep up with African powerhouses such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt.
Under coach Otto Addo, the Black Stars managed only three wins from 15 matches in 2024, with just two of those victories coming in official competitions.
The team’s highest global ranking during the year was 67th in February, but inconsistent performances led to a steady slide to their current position.
Despite their global challenges, the Black Stars’ African ranking places them ahead of teams like Zambia and Gabon, though they trail Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.
At the global level, Argentina remains at the top of the FIFA rankings, followed by France, while Spain and England occupy third and fourth positions. Brazil holds steady in fifth place, with no changes in the top ten since July.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars aim to bounce back in 2025 as they resume their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
They face Chad and Madagascar in March, hoping to turn around their fortunes after a difficult year.
