The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a public warning against the packaging and distribution of water labeled as “galamsey water,” citing serious health risks linked to such practices.
In a statement released on Monday, October 21, 2024, the FDA emphasized that this act violates the Public Health Act.
“The FDA cautions that packaging unwholesome water not only jeopardizes public health but also poses significant risks to the population. It’s important to understand that a licensed facility for sachet water production cannot legally use its premises for any other products. Doing so breaches the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), thereby endangering consumer safety,” the statement read.
The FDA further revealed that it is working closely with security agencies to identify and arrest individuals involved in this illegal activity.
“We want to be clear: anyone engaged in the packaging or distribution of ‘galamsey water’ or any other unsafe water will face severe penalties. The FDA will not tolerate any actions that put public health and safety at risk. We strongly urge the public to avoid participating in or supporting the sale of water contaminated by galamsey or sourced from any other unsafe origins,” it added.
The FDA also reaffirmed its dedication to protecting public health, encouraging the public to report any cases of unsafe water packaging.
“These unlawful activities should be reported to the FDA for swift action. We remain committed to safeguarding the health and safety of all Ghanaians and will continue to monitor and enforce compliance,” the statement concluded.
