Residents of Fawoade Bampenase in the Kwabre East Municipality of Ashanti have called on the Ghana Police Service to increase visibility and strengthen security in the area due to the rising number of robberies.
The residents expressed concern about the frequency of robbery incidents, which have caused fear and panic within the community.
The robberies, carried out by unidentified youth, occur in broad daylight, during power outages, and in the evenings, making the situation more alarming.
In just one week, about five robbery cases have been reported. Ms. Sherifatu Ibrahim, a National Service Personnel and resident of the area, shared her personal experience with the Ghana News Agency.
She recounted how, on February 12, the power went out while it was raining.
The next morning, she discovered her window had been broken, and three bags containing valuable items, including GH₵1,000, her national identification card, health insurance, and other important documents, had been stolen.
She reported the incident to the Mamponteng police, who indicated that they would investigate the matter.
The following day, she found the bags in an uncompleted building nearby, but the thieves had taken the money and other valuables, leaving behind her identification cards and documents.
This was the fifth time Ms. Ibrahim had been targeted by the robbers. On the same day, the robbers struck other houses in the area, stealing items like money, clothes, and even a car battery.
Ms. Ibrahim stated that the rampant robberies had become so disturbing that residents were afraid to go out after 10:00 PM and even early in the morning between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, as these were peak times for robberies.
Some residents have even begun selling their property and moving out of the community due to the persistent robberies.
She urged the police to take immediate action to improve security and protect the residents’ lives and property.
