Some farmers in New Abirem in the Eastern Region have clashed with officials of mining giant, Newmont Ghana Limited.
The farmers were demonstrating on Tuesday over claims that the mining company has taken over their farmlands without paying them any royalties.

Reports indicated that the Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. It is, however, unknown why the Police fired the tear gas.
The organiser of the demonstration, Kofi Deu Kyira told Accra FM on Tuesday 16th October that five people have been left injured in the process.

The farmers claim they will continue to demand that the right thing is done by the company.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the area, Osei Frimpong said he was working hard to bring the situation under control.

He said there were some legalities of the issues that must be looked at by lawyers.
