Fake Military officer arrested in Nkwanta, sentenced to 15 months imprisonment

A man posing as a military officer has been arrested in Nkwanta South and sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraud and impersonation.

The accused, Francis Akwasi, was apprehended at Abrewankor Junction, a farming community in Nkwanta South, after defrauding a local farmer, Godfred Yindan, of GH¢15,000 under the pretense of securing him a position in the military.

The Nkwanta Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Wellington Arhin, delivered the verdict after police investigations revealed the extent of Akwasi’s deception.

According to Seidu Kumi, an officer with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Mr Akwasi had been impersonating a military official, using a fake identity to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims.

He promised Mr Yindan that he could facilitate his enlistment into the military for a fee.

Mr Akwasi, who frequently visited the community dressed in military attire, raised suspicions as he attempted to exert authority over residents.

His behaviour eventually alarmed community members, leading to an investigation and his subsequent arrest.

The court found Akwasi guilty of fraud and impersonation, sentencing him to 15 months in prison and ordering him to repay the GH¢15,000 he collected from the victim.

Speaking to Adom News, the victim, Godfred Yindan, revealed that Akwasi had posed as the brother-in-law of a community member and claimed to be a military officer based in Accra.

Trusting his claims, the community believed he was genuine until his repeated demands for money to “procure logistics for training” exposed his fraudulent activities.

The verdict serves as a warning against impersonation and fraud, highlighting the importance of vigilance in dealing with individuals making such promises.
