Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has urged Members of Parliament to strike a careful balance between their legislative duties and campaign activities as the December 7 elections approaches.
Addressing the House during the 5th meeting of the Fourth Session on Tuesday, October 15, Bagbin stressed the importance of maintaining focus on Parliamentary responsibilities despite the demands of the campaign season.
He noted that, while election campaigns are essential, MPs must not let them overshadow their primary role as legislators, especially with pressing national issues that require immediate attention.
Alban Bagbin acknowledged the significant effort MPs invest in securing or retaining their seats. Still, he was clear that the legislative agenda in the lead-up to the election is of equal, if not greater, importance.
“The legislative agenda ahead is substantial, and we must approach it with the seriousness it deserves. The Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill are time-sensitive and must be debated and concluded promptly,” he said.
The Speaker emphasized that although campaigning is demanding, MPs must carefully manage their time and energy to ensure their legislative responsibilities are not neglected.
