-

Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has claimed that Ghana is on a list of countries with ‘zero hunger.’

He made this assertion during his youth connect meeting at the Borteyman Sports Complex on November 3, 2024.

However, checks by the JoyNews Research Desk have revealed that this claim is FALSE.

Data in the 2024 Sustainable Development Report shows that no country has achieved SDG Goal 2, which seeks to eradicate hunger by 2030.

In fact, the report highlights Ghana as one of the many countries facing ‘major challenges’ in achieving this goal, although there is moderate progress.

The 2024 dashboard also shows that achieving ‘Zero Hunger,’ a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) set by the United Nations to eradicate hunger, remains a significant challenge.

Globally, only a few countries have made substantial progress toward reducing hunger rates to low or minimal levels. However, no country has fully achieved the Zero Hunger goal, due to ongoing issues such as food insecurity, malnutrition, and economic inequality.

In Ghana, the report highlights that the prevalence of undernourishment is 4.9% of the population, while the prevalence of stunting in children under five years of age stands at 17.5%.
