Aggrieved residents of mining communities within the Ahafo region are up in arms with Newmont Gold Ghana Limited for not giving them their share of the national cake.
They claim despite the mining firm’s huge gold bars from their land, it has turned a deaf ear to calls for developmental projects in the area.

Leader of the group, Oman Kofi Adusei, revealed this on Fabewoso, an anti-corruption segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Monday.
He said towns in Kanyesi No. 1 and 2 like Ntotroso, Wamahinso, Yamfo, Gyedu, Afrisipa and many others cannot even boast of potable water after their farmlands were taken from them by Newmont.
Mr Adusei also accused the company of not offering job opportunities to the indigenes with the excuse that they do not have the required skills and qualifications.

He cited how the road linking Kenyasi to Hwidiem, all being capitals of the North and South respectively, are in a deplorable state and making it difficult for farmers to transport their goods to the cities.
Mr Adusei said they have planned a massive demonstration against Newmont if concerns raised are not addressed.
But, the queen mother of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Yaa Adutwumaa Mrosa, expressed shock at the issues raised by the group.

She said the chiefs of both Kenyasi No. 1 and 2 and government representatives are negotiating with Newmont on the issue, thus, was surprised the residents are threatening demonstration.
She urged them to allow the traditional authorities dialogue with management of Newmont to ensure they reach a compromise for the mutual development of the area.
