FA Cup: Kwame Opoku strikes late as Asante Kotoko beat True Democracy to secure semis berth

-

Asante Kotoko have advanced to the semifinals of the 2024/25 FA Cup after a thrilling 2-1 victory over True Democracy at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors started strong, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute through Saaka Dauda’s clinical finish.

The Reds had a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the 38th minute when Kwame Opoku was fouled in the box, earning a penalty.

However, Justice Blay squandered the chance, striking the post and allowing True Democracy to stay in contention.

That miss came back to haunt Kotoko as True Democracy leveled the score in the 61st minute.

A Botchway free-kick took a cruel deflection off the defensive wall, completely wrong-footing goalkeeper Mohammed Camara before nestling into the net.

With the game seemingly headed for a penalty shootout, Kwame Opoku emerged as the hero, netting a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the 93rd minute to send Kotoko through.

The Kumasi-based giants will now face Premier League side Berekum Chelsea in the semifinals, with the winner earning a spot in the final against either Attram De Visser or Golden Kick.
