Head of the Democracy and Good Governance Division at the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), Ebenezer Ofosu Asiedu has stated that an external audit of Ghana’s voters register is unnecessary, as the concerns can be addressed domestically.

He urged stakeholders to find a peaceful resolution to the matter.

In response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to allow a forensic audit of the voters register, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has organised a nationwide protest on Tuesday, September 17, held along approved routes across all 16 regions of Ghana, with a further promise to scale it up to the district EC offices if the elections governing body remains adamant.

Speaking on Joy FM Midday News, Mr Asiedu said, “We hope that these are some of the issues that are coming up, and we pray that the stakeholders involved would find a way to handle this amicably.”

Mr Asiedu emphasised the need for an opportunity to resolve the differences between the two major stakeholders regarding the electoral register, noting also that there is no need for immediate intervention from any external body.

“We believe that, at the end of the day, after today’s demonstrations, there will be an opportunity to reconcile whatever differing positions these two major stakeholders have on the electoral register. We do not see it as something that requires urgent intervention from any external body.”
