The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and the leading advocate for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, Sam George, has voiced growing frustration over the Supreme Court’s delay in addressing legal challenges against the bill.
The proposed legislation, which aims to criminalize and regulate LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy in Ghana, has ignited considerable public debate and faced legal opposition.
Sam George argued that, the prolonged delay in the court’s decision is hindering the proper functioning of both the legislative and executive branches of government.
He stressed the need for a swift resolution, citing the potential wide-reaching impact of these cases.
The Ningo-Prampram MP contends that the Supreme Court’s inaction is causing uncertainty for lawmakers and government officials.
He is urging Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo to expedite the hearings and resolution of these cases, emphasizing their direct implications for governance and decision-making at the highest levels.
“There is no matter before the Supreme Court that is more important than a determination on this matter which stays the hands of both the legislature and the executive. There is no case before the Supreme Court of Ghana today that affects both the legislature and executive for which reason there was a quorum judgment in support by his lordship Justice Yoni Kulendi.
“We believe that and hold the view that in light of the judgment of the Supreme Court in that case, which deals extensively with the same matters raised by Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky, the Chief Justice must empanel the Supreme Court and determine the matter in tandem with what her colleagues in that panel have done,” Sam George said in an interview on Accra based Citi News.
