A delegation from the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), led by former Nigerian President, His Excellency (H.E.) Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, met with Ghana’s National Elections Security Taskforce (NESTF) today, October 8, 2024, at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.
The meeting was part of ongoing pre-election stakeholder engagements aimed at ensuring peaceful and credible elections slated for December 7, 2024.
During the meeting, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who also serves as the Chairman of the NESTF, briefed the delegation on the preparations, strategies, and security measures put in place by the Taskforce to maintain law and order throughout the election period.
Dr. Dampare assured the delegation that the Taskforce is working diligently to safeguard Ghana’s democratic process and ensure that the elections proceed smoothly without incidents of violence or disruptions.
H.E. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, in his address, praised the efforts of the Taskforce, commending their commitment to preserving Ghana’s democratic reputation both within the West African subregion and across the African continent.
He highlighted Ghana’s historical record of peaceful elections and emphasized the importance of maintaining that legacy in the upcoming elections.
He further expressed WAEF’s readiness to provide any necessary support to ensure the electoral process remains peaceful, transparent, and credible.
The West African Elders Forum, an organization dedicated to promoting peace and stability in the region, has been actively engaging key stakeholders in Ghana’s political landscape as part of its broader mission to strengthen democratic governance across West Africa.
This meeting is one of many consultations with election-related institutions aimed at fostering collaboration and ensuring that all security arrangements are adequate ahead of the polls.
The December 2024 elections are expected to be fiercely contested, and the work of the NESTF will be crucial in maintaining peace and security before, during, and after the elections.
