Ex-Minerals Commission CEO files GH¢40m defamation suit against Adom-Otchere

-

The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Commission, Dr. Tony Aubynn, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana.

The legal action, filed on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, also names Ignite Media Group as the second defendant.

In his statement of claim, Dr. Aubynn, who is the Abakoma-Akyempimhene of the Damang-Wassa Division under the Fiase Traditional Area in the Western Region, noted that Mr. Adom-Otchere, in a viral video on September 10, accused him of urging people to engage in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Dr. Aubynn asserts that these comments were defamatory and intended to damage his reputation among the public.

He is asking the High Court in Accra to compel Mr. Adom-Otchere to issue a retraction and an unqualified apology through the same media platforms where the alleged defamatory statements were made.

In addition, Dr. Aubynn is seeking a perpetual injunction to restrain the defendants and their associates from making or disseminating any further defamatory statements about him.

The suit also demands GH¢30 million in general damages for portraying him as dishonest, selfish, hypocritical, corrupt, unpatriotic, and unscrupulous—claims Dr. Aubynn argues have exposed him to public ridicule and contempt.

Furthermore, the plaintiff is seeking GH¢10 million in punitive and exemplary damages against the defendants.
