Ex-Hearts of Oak defender calls for better salaries to keep quality players in Ghana Premier League

Caleb Amankwah has urged club owners to focus more on the welfare of their players, highlighting the importance of better salaries to retain top talent and enhance the competitiveness of local league.

Amankwah, who recently signed with Ethiopian side Commercial Bank FC after leaving Hearts of Oak, pointed out that players in Ethiopia receive better pay compared to those in Ghana.

He believes that improving player salaries in Ghana is essential for keeping quality players in the local leagues, which in turn could attract more fans to stadiums on matchdays.

“If there is money in Ghana, we will stay and play in the Ghana Premier League,” Amankwah said in an interview on Asempa FM.

“If you have a key player and you allow him to leave, what benefit will you get?

“Which player will the supporter come to the stadium to watch? They should give the players the money to stay and play in the Ghana Premier League,” the former Aduana Stars defender added.

Amankwah’s exit from the Ghana Premier League is part of a broader trend of players leaving to join clubs in other African countries, such as Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Africa, in search of better opportunities.
