Former Ghana coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor believes it would be wise to retain Otto Addo as Black Stars coach even he fails to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The senior national team has faced disappointing outcomes in their qualifying matches, suffering a 1-0 loss to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium and managing only a 1-1 draw against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Berkane.
As a result, Ghana currently sits in third place in Group F, with just one point.
Despite this rocky start, Akonnor argues that the frequent changes in national team coaches have hindered the team’s development.
He emphasizes the importance of focusing on long-term progress rather than immediate results.
“I’m looking at how long we can keep a coach so that the coach can have an impact on exactly what he wants to do. Whether we win or lose, there should be some continuity,” he told Angel FM.
“Because sacking coaches have also not done anything for us as it stands now. So, it makes sense to have a different direction. As a nation we must all come together and see it that way,” Akonnor added.
Akonnor also called for patience for Addo and his technical team to turn things around, pointing to Senegal’s coach Aliou Cissé as an example.
“If you look at the Senegal coach when they picked him, he didn’t do well from the beginning [but] after a while we saw the results.”
Addo was reappointed in March this year on a 34-month contract, with an option for an additional 24 months.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars will continue their qualifiers with a doubleheader against Sudan.
The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, at the Accra Sports Stadium, while the return match will take place on October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
