Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has called on journalists to play an active role in the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), highlighting their influence in shaping public opinion and raising awareness.

Speaking on Channel One TV, he emphasized the media’s responsibility in addressing the galamsey crisis.

“The media has a huge role to play. We are broadening and encouraging stakeholder consultations while also focusing on sensitization and education,” he said.

Acknowledging the severe threat illegal mining poses to the country, Murtala reiterated the government’s commitment to working with key stakeholders, including journalists, to enhance public education and advocacy against the menace.

He also stressed the need for collaboration with traditional leaders and security agencies, particularly the Ministries of Defence and Interior, to tackle the issue effectively.

According to him, many illegal miners are heavily armed, necessitating a well-coordinated and decisive response.
