-

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, a demonstration organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi, protesting alleged discrepancies in the voter register, resulted in significant damage to the Electoral Commission (EC) office in the city.

Approximately 5,000 NDC supporters gathered at the party’s Ashanti regional headquarters in Amakuom around 10:30 am before marching to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC).

The protest began peacefully, but tensions escalated when NDC Regional Chairman, Nana Akwasi Agyeman allegedly led the demonstrators to the EC’s regional office, deviating from the planned route to submit their petition at the ARCC.

The situation escalated as the demonstrators clashed with Police.

The Police, who initially refrained from using firearms, were compelled to use tear gas in an effort to control the crowd.

Some of the protesters then reportedly threw stones at the police and entered the EC premises, causing damage, including the shattering of the main glass doors.

The Ghana Police Service issued a statement noting that, the protesters attempted to force their way into the EC premises and threw stones at the Police.

Meanwhile, one officer was injured and is receiving medical treatment.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has wished the injured Police officer a speedy recovery.

The Police has since restored order and is currently investigating the incident.
