Energy Minister-designate announces major initiative to enhance ECG’s revenue

-

Energy Minister-designate John Jinapor has unveiled plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) metering system.

The initiative aims to replace approximately 2.9 million meters urgently to enhance revenue collection.

The Yapei-Kusawgu MP announced this during his vetting before the Appointment Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.

This was after Hemang Lower Denkyira MP, Lawrence Agyinsam, enquired about measures to improve ECG’s revenue and cut losses.

“Of ECG’s 5.2 million total meters, 4.8 million are active, but about 3 million of these are not functioning properly,” Mr Jinapor stated.

The new system will feature mobile money integration, enabling customers to activate their meters using a code-based process.

“Because sometimes it costs people more than four or five times to spend money to get the meter. So if we make it readily available and use economies of scale, I’m sure the price will come down,” he explained.
