Minister of Local Government, Haija Alimah Mahama says they are hopeful the MMDCEs election will take place between June and July 2021.
According to Haija Mahama, a roadmap for the event is still ongoing as a Committee has been set up to help the process.
She stated this during sensitization forum for political parties on the election of MMDCEs in Accra explained that there are four phases of the roadmap which are pre-referendum, referendum, post-referendum and change management activities.

“The Ministry in collaboration with Attorney General has drafted a bill to amend Article 55(3) of the constitution which has received approval of Cabinet and has been presented to Speaker of Parliament,” she stated.
According to her, the Speaker has forwarded it to the Council of State for advice and 70% of citizens have to vote for the bill before it can be approved.

She added they expect parties will give their support and urge their supporters to vote massively yes on the referendum day just as it happened in the creation of the new Regions.
