As Ghana’s 2024 elections draw closer, the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency is witnessing spirited campaigns from incumbent MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan and her contender, actor-turned-politician John Dumelo.
During her recent visit to the University of Ghana campus, Lydia Alhassan turned a chauffer for a day as she drove the campus shuttle to connect with students directly.
This is part of her campaign strategy to familiarize with the constituents, majority of whom are students in the Legon environs.
Also, Madam Alhassan has initiated a free driving lessons for registered voters in Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, which comes with license after completion.
Meanwhile, John Dumelo has focused on providing tangible support to students, helping over 42 tertiary students pay their fees, distributing laptops, and gifting grocery-filled chop boxes to senior high school students.
The Ayawaso West Wuogon seat, historically a New Patriotic Party (NPP) stronghold, has only been won by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) once, in 1996.
Lydia Alhassan first secured the seat during the 2019 by-election and narrowly defeated Dumelo in 2020 by approximately 2,000 votes.
With both candidates pulling out all the stops, the race promises to be a heated battle in one of Ghana’s most-watched constituencies.
