Election 2024: We didn’t expect this margin of defeat – Sammi Awuku reacts to NPP’s defeat [Listen]

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Akuapim North and the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has reacted to the NPP’s historic defeat in the December 7 elections.

Speaking to Osei Bonsu on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Mr. Awuku admitted that the party did not anticipate losing by such a significant margin.

“We didn’t expect to lose, especially by this margin, however, we must face reality and not live in denial” he said.

While expressing mixed feelings about his own victory, Mr. Awuku stressed the need for the NPP to rise to the occasion and reorganize itself for the future.

“Although I am going to Parliament, I am not happy about these developments. But this is the time to work hard with the majority and support the leadership of the party to bounce back. Ghanaians may give us the nod again if we organize ourselves very well,” he stated.

He encouraged party members not to dwell on their disappointment for too long, adding that resilience is the hallmark of the NPP.

“It’s okay to feel moody for a while, but we must keep our eyes on the ball. The NPP is a party of resilience and courage. We have done it before, and we can do it again,” he declared.

Mr. Awuku also stressed the importance of mobilising the youth to strengthen the party’s base. “We need aggressive mobilisation of young people. This is the time to avail ourselves and support the party.”

Mr. Awuku also extended his congratulations to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their victory.

“We congratulate the NDC and wish them well in leading the country. We won’t wish them bad; instead, we’ll pray for their success,” he said.

He also commended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, for conceding defeat early.

“Dr. Bawumia did the honourable thing by conceding early. That shows true leadership,” Mr. Awuku remarked.

Going forward, the NLA boss urged party members to take their defeat as a lesson and work towards reclaiming their position as Ghana’s ruling party.
