Election 2024: NDC to petition Asantehene over alleged rigging plot

-

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to petition Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over an alleged rigging plot in the Ashanti Region.

The plot, which the NDC has alleged, involves the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Brigadier General Michael Opoku.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the NDC National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, accused President Akufo-Addo of tasking the military officer to execute the plot.

Aimed at interfering with the electoral process, the plot, Mr. Gyamfi alleged, will begin with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2.

The petition, therefore, seeks the Asantehene’s intervention to prevent potential violence.

“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading to, during, and after the December 7 election, is officially made aware of these developments because the headquarters of this operation [led by Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is in Kumasi.

“And I know that Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order,” he stated.
