The Ministry of Education has clarified reports purporting plans to phase out the teacher trainee allowance.
The Ministry has said the news item does not reflect the true and accurate reporting of what the Minister stated.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, reportedly revealed plans to transition teacher trainee allowances into an enhanced student loan scheme to allow students to cater for their own feeding and personal expenses.
In his explanation, the minister emphasized that while allowances would be maintained temporarily, the government plans to phase out the allowance system gradually.
The Tamale South MP, according to reports by Daily Graphic, made these comments during a meeting with the leadership of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, Ghana (PRINCOF) in Accra last Thursday.
However, in a statement, the Ministry has said the headline “Teacher Trainee Allowance to go” is not only sensational but misleading, as the narration of the story indicated.
“The Minister, during his interaction with Executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), explained that Government is open to augmenting the financial needs of students in the Colleges of Education.
“To this end, he indicated that Government would seek to consider an enhanced loan scheme for students in this category, if need be. In addition, the Minister was emphatic that Government would maintain the allowances until further deliberations and a firm agreement are reached with all stakeholders,” the statement noted.
