Education Minister tasks NTC to propose alternative to licensure exams

-

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to develop a new professional framework to replace the current teacher licensure examinations, as the government prepares to scrap the policy.

The move follows President John Mahama’s campaign promise ahead of the 2024 general elections to abolish the licensure exams, which he described as poorly conceived and flawed in implementation.

The Minister emphasized the need for a more effective and holistic approach to teacher qualification.

He tasked the NTC to explore alternative assessment methods rooted in academic training and practical fieldwork, rather than relying solely on written examinations.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) Board, the Minister also raised broader concerns about the quality of tertiary graduates entering the job market.

He noted growing dissatisfaction from the private sector regarding the preparedness and competence of graduates, urging GTEC to strengthen its quality assurance mandate across all tertiary institutions.

According to him, improving teacher training and the overall quality of higher education is crucial for national development and the future of Ghana’s workforce.
