ECG warns customers against illegal connections

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has warned customers who engage in illegal connections to stop or face the full rigors of the law when caught.

According to the Director of Customer Services at ECG, Dr. Mrs. Belinda Y. Dwamena, while the company strives to serve customers to their satisfaction, some customers are bypassing ECG systems to engage in various illegal activities.

She issued the warning during a visit by the Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Hon. Herbert Krapah, to the Avenor ECG office in Accra.

Dr. Y. Dwamena stated that, ECG has recently enhanced some services and added digital platforms to make it easier for customers to access their services, yet some are still stealing from the company.

“Customers, like we are saying, we do these things, but we realize that most of them want to bypass the meters, and we want to use this platform to educate every customer that when we catch you, the law will take its course,” she asserted.

Dr. Y. Dwamena also informed the public that ECG has sufficient meters in stock and advised against relying on any ‘goro boys’ or unauthorized individuals to purchase meters.

“We want to tell the Ghanaian public that ECG has meters; do not go to anybody known as a ‘goro boy’ or not and buy a meter,” she added.

She also cautioned customers against sending payments to unauthorized individuals.

“Even if someone calls a customer from the office claiming to help them get the meter on time, they should not agree. ECG has our app, and all our payments go through that app and no other source; don’t send anybody any MoMo, we don’t have any MoMo account.”

The Minister visited the Avenor ECG office to provide feedback to ECG and also to encourage them to work harder to regain customers’ trust.

Although Hon. Krapah applauded ECG for some improvements, he noted that a significant portion of the population is still dissatisfied with the company’s responsiveness.

Mr. Krapah was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Energy in Charge of Power, Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah, and some officials from the Ministry of Energy.
