The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Masubir Mahama, has assured Ghanaians that the introduction of new smart meters is not intended to deceive the public.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, he said ECG is not deliberately installing the new smart meters to cause discomfort to Ghanaians.
“We are here to serve you, not to cheat you” he said.
His comment comes as ECG embarks on a major project to replace outdated and malfunctioning electricity meters in the Accra East region with advanced Smart MMS-compliant prepaid meters.
The initiative, which is scheduled to run from September 2 to September 30, 2024, is part of ECG’s broader strategy to modernize its metering system and ensure accurate revenue collection.
The replacement exercise, mandated by the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), is focused on improving service delivery, enhancing customer satisfaction, and addressing the inefficiencies of outdated meters that fail to record electricity consumption accurately.
Mr. Mahama stated that, the new smart meters are designed to capture your consumption accurately, and they are being installed at no cost to you.
“Do not pay anything to the installers” he urged.
The project, he noted targets key operational districts, including Makola, Teshie, Legon, Roman Ridge, Kwabenya, Mampong, Dodowa, and Adentan, with a goal of replacing 250,000 meters.
The ECG MD disclosed the progress made so far.
“We have already replaced almost 500,000 meters and can now install up to 100,000 meters a month. This initiative will also help reduce post-paid billing in the country” he added.
He also urged Ghanaians to be vigilant and not allow others to use ECG’s initiatives for personal gain or to mislead them.
“We need to be very vigilant so people don’t use ECG to deceive others,” Mahama cautioned, adding that the new meters are uniform and the MMS system should be communicative, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
He therefore stated that this project should not be politicized, as it is in the best interest of the country.
“Let’s not use this for politics; our goal is to improve service and ensure everyone is fairly billed,” he said.
For those who have not yet had their meters replaced, he assured that ECG would soon reach their areas.
