ECG being deliberately discredited to pave way for privatization – PUWU

-

The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has accused government officials of deliberately tarnishing the image of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to justify plans for its privatization.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Deputy General Secretary of PUWU, Reverend Enoch Paul Hayes, alleged that ECG is being unfairly blamed for the ongoing power outages and the issue of missing containers—all in a bid to portray the company as incompetent.

“Why must we always tag a dog just to hang it? The current power outages are being blamed on ECG to create the impression that it is underperforming so they can sell it off,” Rev. Hayes stated.

His comments come in the wake of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s confirmation that Cabinet has approved the privatization of ECG—a move that has sparked tension at the company’s headquarters, Electro Volta House, where staff have begun expressing their disapproval.

Rev. Hayes questioned the handling of the missing containers incident, noting that several agencies, including the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Customs, are involved in clearing goods at the port.

“Why was ECG solely blamed when other institutions also play a role? Our mistake was ordering more than we could clear—Ghana, why?” he lamented.

He warned that privatizing ECG could deepen the country’s energy woes and vowed that the union would fiercely resist any attempt to hand the company over to private interests.
