Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Electoral Commission (EC), Silvia Annor, has given detailed reasons behind the electoral body’s decision to compile a new voters’ management system and register.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem on Friday, Ms Annor, explained that the high refurbishment cost of the current voters’ management system compared to the less costly procurement of a new one, is the main reason for the EC’s push for a new register.
“Refurbishment of the current register will cost us some Ghs 487,998,714 whereas procuring a new one will cost us some Ghs 390, 255,186,” she noted.

According to her, aside the current system being obsolete, the Commission has been warned by experts of a possible break down of the equipment during usage.
“Whatever be the case we will need to get new machines, even if we decide to use the old ones we will definitely need to buy new ones going forward, because going forward we’ve been advised that the machines will crush,” she said.
Another reason she gave was that the EC wants to eliminate the high rate of manual verification done as it doesn’t help the management system.
