EC staff are well-trained, competent to produce a credible register – Jean Mensa

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission(EC) Jean Mensa has reiterated its stance not to conduct a forensic audit into the 2024 provisional voter’s register.

At Tuesday’s Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, Madam Mensa stated that the Commission staff are well-trained and competent enough to produce a credible register.

“Our staff are well-trained, and have the capacity and the competencies as well as the skills to undertake the task of producing the final and credible voter’s register. We certainly do not require external assistance in our line of work,” she stated.

She pledged the EC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, citing its mandate under Article 45 (a) of the 1992 Constitution.

“As a body mandated by Article 45 (a) of the 1992 Constitution to compile the register of voters and to revise it as such periods as determined by law, we urge you all to trust us to perform our functions as enshrined in the constitution.”

“The Commission has a track record and is globally respected for delivering free, fair, credible and transparent elections and electoral processes and this includes the compilation of the provisional voter’s register,” she said.

The EC Chairperson emphasized its long-standing track record of delivering credible elections and urged stakeholders to place their trust in the Commission’s ability to execute its duties fairly and transparently.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the past weeks have been requesting for a forensic audit, citing alleged discrepancies in the provisional voter’s register.

However, the EC demanded that the NDC provided evidence to support its claims, but it has not been heeded to.

She assured political parties and the public of its commitment to an open and inclusive electoral process, welcoming feedback and cooperation from all parties as the nation prepares for the 2024 general elections.
