EC gives breakdown on eligible voters for 2024 election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has given a comprehensive breakdown of eligible voters ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

At Tuesday’s Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa indicated that the total number of valid voters stands at 18,772,795.

She explained that, this number comprises 9,690,173 females, while 9,082,622 are males.

The register according to her also includes 708,282 first-time voters, reflecting the engagement of new participants in the democratic process.

For special voters which include security personnel and election officials, she revealed the number as 131,475.

Additionally, there are 332,110 transferred voters, indicating those who have changed their voting locations.

The statistics also highlight 2,167 proxy voters, who will vote on behalf of others unable to attend in person.

Apart from theses, the register lists 32,974 applicants on the exceptions list and 26,798 on the multiple lists.

Meanwhile, Madam Mensa assured that the EC is fully committed to fulfilling its mandate and urged the public to have trust in its staff.

She stressed the critical importance of voter registration, calling it the “foundation of any election,” and reiterated the EC’s responsibility in ensuring that the register is robust and trustworthy.
