The General Secretary
of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has
disclosed that the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean
Mensa’s attitude towards the opposition party is worrying.
To General Mosquito as
he is popularly called, the problem is not with the NDC as a party but the
attitude of the EC which is not healthy.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, General Mosquito described the posture of the EC boss as a possible threat to the commission and Ghana’s democracy.
“It appears Jean Mensa
is harbouring some prejudice against the NDC and somehow I believe is because
of the opinion we expressed about her suitability for the position when her
appointment was made and she thinks that is a sufficient reason for denying us
our rights,” he stated.
There seems to be a
sour relationship between the NDC and the EC over criticisms regarding the
limited registration exercise to be undertaken by the EC.
The NDC kicked against
the upcoming limited registration exercise to be conducted at the district
offices of the EC.
The party raised
concerns over a decentralised process with the explanation that the district
office registration would disenfranchisement most Ghanaians.
However, the EC has rejected the claims arguing that, the plan to organise the registration at the district level falls in line with measures to upgrade its Information Technology infrastructure.
