Each Ghanaian now owes GH₵20K due to Akufo-Addo’s excessive borrowing – Mahama [Video]

Former President John Mahama has asserted that each Ghanaian now owe GH₵20,000 due to the excessive borrowing by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

According to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the ruling government has increased the public debt stock from GH₵120 billion to GH₵760 billion.

The situation, he says, makes Ghana’s future bleak and suffocating.

Addressing a rally at Atebubu Amantin, John Mahama told electorates that the future of the country has been collateralized through excessive borrowing and mismanagement.

He questioned how a government that promised not to borrow could excessively borrow and has too little work or impact on the livelihoods of Ghanaians.

“If we are to share the debt for us to pay, something that should have been GHC 4,000 now it’s GHC 20,000 that is 200 million old currency and what I am saying is that it is not Akufo-Addo that will pay that money. They say they cannot pay again, asking the debt duration to be extended to 2030 to 2050… who will pay that money? It is the new generation that will pay.” He said.

Mr Mahama has been wrapping up his campaign in the Bono East region with increased enhancements with various constituents.

The NDC has described the reception as encouraging, showing optimism to increase the 55 percent margin they had in the 2020 presidential elections.
