The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced a ban on the celebration of the WA YAA DORM, WA YAA KLOWEM festival in Somanya, citing security concerns and the potential for clashes with another traditional event.
The council explained that the newly introduced festival was scheduled to coincide with the grand durbar of the Plau Kani festival, an annual celebration observed by the chiefs and people of Plau in Somanya.
Reports of rising tensions and growing hostility in the area prompted REGSEC to carry out an urgent security assessment.
Following the review, REGSEC noted that both festivals were expected to use the same procession route on Saturday, April 19, 2025 — a situation that posed a heightened risk of confrontation between the two groups.
As a result, the council, acting in accordance with the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2020 (Act 1030), has placed a restriction on the WA YAA DORM, WA YAA KLOWEM celebration for that day.
The council emphasized that the decision is aimed at safeguarding public safety and ensuring stability in the Yilo Krobo Municipality. Organizers have been urged to comply fully with the directive in the interest of peace and order.
Meanwhile, REGSEC has directed the Ghana Police Service to maintain law and order throughout the Plau Kani festival to guarantee the safety of residents and attendees.
