The Dunkwahene, Okoforubour Obeng Nuako III, has called on small-scale miners across Ghana to take proactive steps in combating illegal mining activities that are devastating the country’s environment.
His appeal was made during the commissioning of Dunkwa Ahenfie, a historic site that he has restored in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region.
In his address, the Dunkwahene encouraged small-scale miners to unite and form a task force to root out illegal miners within their ranks.
He stressed that the miners themselves are in the best position to identify and confront those engaged in destructive mining practices that harm the land, forests, and water bodies.
“You know who among you is engaging in illegal mining, and you are best equipped to fight it,” he stated, urging them to organize and take action against irresponsible miners who operate in secret.
Okoforubour Obeng Nuako III, the eighth chief to ascend the Dunkwa stool, underscored the critical role that small-scale miners must play in protecting the environment and promoting responsible mining practices.
He also urged the government to allow miners to lead the fight against illegal mining, as they are more closely connected to the problem.
Adding to the call, the Vice President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, Okomankra Kwame Akonu X, who is also the Omanhene of Enyan Abaasa Traditional Area, urged the Dunkwahene to collaborate with stakeholders to address illegal mining on the Offin River.
He highlighted the importance of restoring the river to its natural state and called for collective efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable development.
“It is vital that we take action to combat illegal mining on the Offin River. If we begin the fight here, it will inspire others upstream to do the same,” he remarked.
During the event, the president and vice president of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, along with Denkyira Hemaa Benjamin Kwame Amoonu, were honored with a special award for their ongoing efforts to promote the well-being of the community.
