Nasiru Iddrisu, the driver whose bus was attacked and burnt in Walewale, leading to the death of seven people, has shared his account of the tragic incident.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nasiru revealed that he is still struggling to come to terms with the devastation.

Describing the harrowing experience, Nasiru said his bus, registered GR 7501-21, was en route from Widana to Kumasi when it developed a mechanical fault. Concerned about the rising insecurity on the highway, Nasiru decided to drive towards a police barrier near Loagri for the safety of his passengers.

“I informed my car owner, who assured me that the part for the bus would be sent via a Tamale-bound bus. By 10 to 11 pm, I received the message that the part had arrived, and I had to go to Tamale to pick it up the following morning,” he said.

Nasiru left for Tamale to collect the part, leaving the bus under the watch of the police, the mate, and the passengers.

While in Tamale, he received a call informing him that the bus had been set on fire. “I rushed back immediately and found the bus still ablaze. Some people were injured and rushed to the hospital, while others were trapped. There were even human parts scattered around,” he explained.

The sight was too much for Nasiru to bear. “It was a difficult moment for me, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had never seen anything like this before. Although this wasn’t the first incident, ours was particularly devastating,” he said.

Nasiru added that the unknown gunmen stormed the scene and opened fire. He was informed that both passengers and police officers fled for their lives, while others were caught up in the chaos.
