President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu as the Acting Government Statistician, pending further consultations with the Council of State.
The announcement was made in an official statement from the Presidency on Friday.
Dr. Iddrisu, a seasoned economist and public sector leader, brings extensive experience to the role.
He currently serves as Director of the Economic Strategy and Research Division at the Ministry of Finance, where he has played a key role in shaping Ghana’s macroeconomic policies.
His current responsibilities include leading national efforts in economic forecasting, policy research, and coordinating assessments of the country’s real and external sectors.
Over the past decade, Dr. Iddrisu has held several high-level government positions, including:
Director, Economic Research and Forecasting Division (2013–2019): Led macroeconomic modelling and long-term economic projections.
Acting Director, Real Sector Division (2010–2013): Oversaw research into sectoral growth and productivity.
He also serves as the Ministry of Finance’s representative on numerous governing boards and technical committees, where his expertise informs critical policy decisions.
In addition to his public service, Dr. Iddrisu is a part-time lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). He holds a PhD in International Development Studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan.
His academic background also includes a Master of Public Administration in Public and Economic Policy from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Economics, and a BA in Economics with French from the University of Ghana.
Dr. Iddrisu has also worked as a consultant for international organizations such as Oxfam GB and the World Bank, further cementing his reputation as a leading voice in economic development and policy.
His appointment to lead the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is provisional, subject to approval by the Council of State. Once confirmed, he is expected to play a crucial role in advancing data-driven policymaking and national development planning.
