Don’t rush to publish stories without proper verification – NMC boss to journalists

-

The National Media Commission (NMC) has advised journalists against rushing to publish stories when all details of a doubtful story are not given.

The NMC Chairman, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo said a good journalistic piece must not be subject to any ambiguity or falsehood.

Speaking at the Adom Brands national dialogue on media freedom in Kumasi, Mr Ayeboafo emphasised that, the content of a publication must be clear with all parties involved contacted for their sides.

According to him, the media must always strive for accuracy instead of speed in their reportage, stating some journalists at times fall short of verification and cross-checking.

“But we must investigate the story to ensure we have all the facts. If you are not certain, leave the story because it is better not to publish than go ahead and create problems. If it is not true, we must be ready for the consequences,” he cautioned.
Stressing that nobody has the right to impede the right of journalists, the NMC Chairman also admonished journalists to be guided by the ethics of the profession.
Mr. Ayeboafo added that, every action has a consequence, hence once a journalist’s story offends someone, he or she must be willing to do the needful.
