You don't need Neurosurgical treatment abroad – Dr. Thomas Dakurah

-

The head of Neurosurgery department at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Thomas Dakurah says no Ghanaian needs to seek neurosurgical treatment abroad if the department is provided with the right resources to work with.
He says the country can boast of equally competent neurosurgeons that are capable of giving patients right treatments akin to what is offered abroad.
Dr. Dakurah was speaking during an interactive session organized by the Apollo Hospitals Group on Monday at the Holiday Inn hotel in Accra.
The objective of the event was to create an environment for some senior healthcare professionals from Apollo Hospitals, India to interact with the medical fraternity of Ghana.
Speaking to Joy News on the side of the session, Dr. Dakurah said, “If the Indians can do it then there is no reason why we can’t do it. All it takes is commitment and I believe we are capable and we can do it; if we put the resources in place and we get the personnel to do what is expected of them, we can do it”.
“I don’t see why we should be shipping patients to India all the time, maybe for the very extraordinary occasional  cases that are difficult to treat here, but aside that, most of cases we should be able to treat here”, he added.
The session also included experience-sharing by some patients who have undergone treatment successfully and are now living a healthy life.
Over the last 5 years, there have been many collaborative efforts between the Neurosurgery department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, and the Apollo Institute of Neurosciences at Apollo Health City Hyderabad.
