Elmina Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah has been charged with breaching Section 13(1)(k) of the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Code following an incident during Sunday’s Division One League match against Swedru All Blacks.
Asamoah is accused of assaulting referee Eso Doh Morrison and has until Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to respond to the charge.
A widely circulated video shows Asamoah attempting to strike the match official with a stone after Sharks suffered a 1-0 defeat.
The confrontation occurred as referee Morrison was heading toward the dressing room tunnel, where he was approached by three physically imposing fans.
Despite the efforts of police officers and an unidentified individual who attempted to shield him, some Elmina Sharks players managed to reach the referee.
Footage from the scene captures Asamoah picking up a stone and making a wild swing at Morrison.
However, the intervention of a police officer and the unidentified man prevented the blow from making direct contact with the referee’s head.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to take further action following Asamoah’s response to the charge.
