President and co-owner of Young Apostles Football Club, Samuel Anim Addo, has dismissed a club statement distancing itself from his comments about referee Maxwell Hanson.
Anim Addo, a former member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, described Hanson as a referee used for “dirty work” following his controversial officiating during the Matchday 16 fixture between Dreams FC and Accra Lions at the Tuba AstroTurf, which Dreams FC won 1-0.
The outspoken football administrator further alleged that the GFA had threatened to relegate Young Apostles after he criticized the officiating standards in the Ghana Premier League.
In response to his remarks, Young Apostles issued an official statement disassociating the club from Anim Addo’s comments.
“Young Apostles FC wishes to clarify that a recent statement made by Mr. Samuel Anim Addo (Club Official/Member) on social media directed at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) does not reflect the views or opinions of our club. We strongly disassociate ourselves from these comments and any sentiments expressed therein,” the statement read.
However, Anim Addo has urged the public to disregard the release, calling it illegitimate. Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, he questioned the authority behind the statement.
“That’s another unfortunate situation. It’s not from the club; I am a co-owner of the club. Whoever wrote that letter has no authority over me. Disregard that statement,” he said.
“The person who sanctioned that letter is not the CEO but a general manager, and he does not have authority beyond me. Nobody authorized him to write that letter, but I know where all this is coming from. Don’t worry,” he added.
Meanwhile, Anim Addo has been charged by the GFA Disciplinary Committee over his comments. He has until Monday, January 13, to respond to the charges.
