Disclosing Black Stars’ budget is Sports Ministry’s responsibility – GFA

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has clarified that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sports—not the GFA—to disclose the budget for the Black Stars.

His comments come in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s directive during the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, instructing the Sports Minister to ensure transparency regarding national team budgets.

“Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, now a shadow of their former selves, will be in action. I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable, particularly on the budget for the team,” Mahama stated.

“There will be no secrecy in how much money the government puts into the national team. The budget presented by the FA and other associations must be made public because it’s taxpayers’ money.”

However, Asante Twum emphasized that budget transparency falls under the jurisdiction of the Sports Ministry, not the GFA.

“Making the Black Stars’ budget public is not the responsibility of the Ghana Football Association. It is the responsibility of the Sports Ministry,” he told Sports FM.

Meanwhile, after a disappointing campaign in 2024, the Black Stars are set to regroup next month for their Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
