The Ghana Police Service has called on the public to refrain from violent acts as the nation awaits the official declaration of the presidential results from the general election.
Addressing the media on Monday, December 9, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi warned that individuals involved in violent behavior would face the full force of the law.
She said anyone caught perpetrating violence would be arrested and prosecuted.
This caution comes after reports of violent incidents during the elections, which have so far resulted in three fatalities. The police revealed that 89 suspects have been arrested for various offenses, including vandalism, looting, and property destruction.
Among these, 40 suspects are directly linked to acts of violence.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi confirmed that all suspects are currently in custody and will be processed through the appropriate legal channels.
The police have also introduced measures to ensure public safety in the post-election period.
These measures include increased patrols, intelligence-driven operations to identify and apprehend violent individuals, and heightened security at key state facilities. Ongoing consultations with government officials and stakeholders are part of the broader strategy to maintain order.
ACP Ansah-Akrofi assured the public of the police’s commitment to preserving peace and urged citizens to support efforts to maintain stability during this critical time.
She stressed the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the nation’s security and fostering a peaceful post-election environment.
