A Psychologist, Charity Ama Kuwornu has cautioned people to avoid attributing mental health issues to spirituality.
Rather, she encouraged regular hospital visits for mental health screenings if any signs arise.
In an interview with Adom News, Ms. Kuwornu said the country’s effort to reduce mental illnesses is improving because there are a lot of awareness campaigns in the media and other stakeholder engagements.
She mentioned that in Ghana, there is a prevailing belief that mental health issues are largely spiritual, which negatively impacts people’s willingness to seek help at hospitals.
Charity urged everyone to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues, emphasizing that mental health problems are now a part of everyday life.
She highlighted the importance of seeking help from a psychiatrist if one notices signs such as frequent changes in mood, forgetfulness, confused thinking, or depression in themselves or others.
Ms. Kuwornu explained that, while a headache might seem like a minor issue, it could also be a symptom of a deeper mental health problem, so it’s crucial to get screened at a mental health facility.
She also pointed out that someone who appears well-dressed and outwardly fine might still be struggling internally.
She underscored the need for frequent checkups to help reduce mental health issues in the country.
