Delayed capitation grant disbursement will render increment meaningless – GNECC

-

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has sounded a warning bell, cautioning that the recent increment in capitation grants will be nothing more than a hollow victory if disbursement is not timely.

This comes on the heels of the Finance Minister’s announcement during the mid-year budget presentation, where he touted the increase in capitation grants from GH¢5.00 in 2016 to GH¢15.00 in 2024.

While commending the government for the increment, the National Coordinator of GNECC, Bernice Mpere-Gyekye emphasized that the delay in disbursement will render the increase meaningless.

“We applaud the government for recognizing the importance of capitation grants, but we urge them to ensure that the funds are released on time,” she stressed.

The capitation grant is a crucial component aimed at supporting basic schools in providing quality education.

However, delays in disbursement has left schools struggling to cope with the financial burden.

GNECC’s warning highlights the plight of foundation schools and learners who bear the brunt of delayed funding.

“Timely disbursement is crucial to ensure that schools can plan and provide quality education. Any delay will only exacerbate the existing challenges,” Mpere-Gyekye noted.
