The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed concern over the growing trend of negativity in journalism.
Speaking at the Adom Brands’ national dialogue on ‘Defending Media Freedom’ in Kumasi, Chairman Wontumi argued that some journalists are now thriving on insults and biased reporting.
According to him, many journalists focus on negative stories because they sell, often damaging the reputations of individuals without proper fact-checking.
“Some journalists think when they criticize and insult someone, they’ve done well, but that’s not the case,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi also condemned recent incidents where high-ranking figures like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, were disrespected by journalists.
“Nowadays, people can just turn on the camera and speak disrespectfully to elders. Recently, Otumfuo was disrespected by some journalists, which is very bad because for someone of high power like him, it’s not about him, it’s about the people” he said.
Chairman Wontumi urged the media to remain objective, unbiased, and be circumspect in their reportage.
