The Electoral
Commission (EC) has refuted claims that it is creating 25 new constituencies in
addition to the existing 275 constituencies in Ghana.
According to the EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, the creation of new constituencies has not currently been considered by the Commission, so the claims making rounds are total lies.
“We have seen
reports in the public domain and we can say for a fact that this is not coming
from the Commission. The Commission has not met to consider this although this
is an issue on its agenda. But, those figures and the information put out there
are not true,” she told the media.
“I am sure that nothing
stops the Commission from considering or creating new constituencies but this
is an issue that is not on our agenda. Although the creation of new constituencies
is the mandate of the Commission, it is not something that is occupying us at
the moment,” the EC boss added.
The rebuttal by the EC
follows media reports making rounds that the government was pushing the EC to
create 25 new constituencies ahead of the 2020 elections.
She, however, said
there is an on-going assessment by the Commission and the EC will decide if it
has to create those constituencies or not.
